Converting show ground full of shedsAnother transformation that happens each year is the change from Shepton Mallet show ground in to the event site for Soul Survivor, the Christian youth festival. We were asked by one of our regular clients to provide lighting production for this event; they take several different buildings and convert them into different event spaces. We provide the lighting for a live gigs venue, a cinema venue, a performance venue, and a couple of other small spaces. With in the cinema venue, which is a frame and cladding barn, we utilise the metal work and place Par 56 short nose units on each leg, these all run back to a 6 channel dimmer rack which is controlled by a simple desk. In this venue, we also put a 4m piece of truss in with 6 Par 64 lamps on to provide lighting to a small stage. In both the ‘Gigs’ and ‘Performance’ venue we a put a similar lighting rig in as both have a large stage, we use QX30 to provide two back trusses, on each hanging Mac 250’s and bars of 6 with Par 64’s on, as well as 4 way blinders. Front of house we use bars of 6 again, loaded with medium flood Par 64 lamps, and Source Four profiles to provide some specific coverage. The stage areas in both venues are ever changing, but the standard equipment is a range of Martin Macs, Par 64 floor cans, and tank traps on each side, last year we used Par 56 LED fixtures for the tank traps to enable more effects, in years previous they were loaded with Par 64’s. Both venues have 24 way dimmer racks with 3 phase distro’s and control coming from Avolites Pearl 2000’s, last year we used a Avo Pearl 2008 in one venue which lead to the purchase of the Avo Pearl Expert. In addition, the performance venue has a central truss spine which is loaded with Martin Mac’s from Mini Macs, 250, 300, 500, and 600’s With a bit of thought, any venue can be transformed, the other venues consisted of small lighting rigs, using standard par cans, smaller intelligent lighting units and alpha packs.
